588 RTX [Blade]

Overview

The more compact shape and "S" sole promote versatility around the greens without sacrificing bunker performance.

Player Type

Pro thru Mid Handicap

Performance Features

Grooves
16% Larger Grooves

Developed closely with tour players, these U-Grooves are more precise and 16% larger to maximize spin on critical scoring shots – especially out of the rough, sand and in wet conditions.

Laser Milling
Rougher, More Durable Laser Milling

Advanced surface roughness technology is now more durable and dimensionally optimized for even more friction at impact. This helps generate even more spin on chips, pitches and partial shots from any lie.

Rotex Pattern
Rotex Pattern

Directionally milled face pattern adds roughness and imparts maximum spin on open-face wedge shots where impact tends to be closer to the toe.

S Sole
S Sole

Inspired by Cleveland Golf's popular CG15 wedge, preferred by tour players and amateurs alike. Wider sole width near the heel, narrow sole width near the toe improves bunker performance without sacrificing versatility.

Distance Gapping

A wedge set with proper distance gaps will ensure more full shots, which are easier to control. Starting from the Pitching Wedge, make sure the player builds a set with distance gaps of 12-16 yards between each wedge. For most players, loft gaps of 4-6 degrees between each wedge will achieve this.

44° PW Typical Wedge Sets:

[   48°   52°   56°   60°   ]
[   48°   54°   60°   ]
[   50°   54°   58°   ]

46° PW Typical Wedge Sets:

[   50°   54°   58°   ]
[   52°   56°   60°   ]
[   50°   56°   60°   ]

General PW Loft Guidelines

  • Game Improvement Sets - 43° - 45°
  • "Players" Sets - 46° - 47°
  • Very old iron sets (1990's and before) - 48° - 49°

NOTE: Based on the Pitching Wedge loft, players should choose wedge lofts accordingly. Confirm distances on a launch monitor if available.

Bounce Types

To simplify the complexity surrounding bounce, Cleveland Golf developed a dot labeling system that is engraved on each wedge.
Low Bounce

Low Bounce

  1 Dot

Good when playing from firm conditions and tight lies. Also, fits players with shallow attack angles.

Standard Bounce

Standard Bounce

  2 Dot

Accommodates the largest variety of sand, turf and swing types.

High Bounce

High Bounce

  3 Dot

Excellent from softer turf conditions and bunkers. Good for players with very steep attack angles.

Proper Wedge Sets

Players are using more wedges than ever due to the performance and scoring benefits of gap and lob wedges. Now, about 75% of tour players use a 3-wedge set and 25% use a 4-wedge set. For added benefit and short game consistency, tour players commonly replace all lofts of a wedge set at once. When selecting new wedges, consider replacing the entire set for the following reasons:

Wedges

Consistent Address and Performance

Wedges from the same manufacturer and model are designed as a cohesive set. The weights, sole widths, bounces, and offsets have engineered progressions for consistent set performance. They are designed to look the same at address and have similar sole contours. Using a wedge set composed of the same model will aid the player visually, allow for predictable impacts, and produce a more consistent feel.

Wedges

Even Wedge Wear

Over time, bunker play wears groove edges and faces - reducing spin perfomance. Adding one new wedge with new grooves into a worn wedge set makes distance control challenging because of inconsistent spin performance between wedges.

Even Wedge Wear

Precise Gap Spacing

Wedges with regular loft spacing 4-6 degrees apart will create tighter and more even distance gap spacing between short irons and wedges. Tighter gaps allow players to hit full shots more frequently, which improves accuracy and lowers scores.

Precise Gap Spacing

Versatility vs. Forgiveness

Versatility

588 RTX

588 RTX

The more compact shape and slightly wider S sole promote versatility around the greens without sacrificing bunker performance.

Forgiveness

588 RTX CB

588 RTX CB

The slightly larger shape, cavity back, and wide Reverse C sole provide more forgiveness on full shots, bunker shots, and pitches around the green.

Finish is mostly personal preference

Black Pearl tends to reduce glare more effectively.

Satin Chrome hides wear marks and scratches.

Spin, performance, and feel are identical.

Glossary

Bounce

Bounce

Bounce is defined as the angle (in degrees) between the ground and the club's sole plane. At impact in soft turf or sand, a higher bounce angle increases the upward resisting force on the sole of the club to prevent excess digging. For firm turf and sand, lower bounce angles improve contact by reducing this resisting force, allowing the leading edge to easily slide underneath the ball.

Camber

Camber

Camber is the curvature of the sole from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Camber reduces bounce on back of sole and increases bounce angle on front of sole.

Grooves

Grooves

Grooves function like tread on a tire to channel moisture and debris away from the contact surface to improve friction. Wedges are used more frequently than irons from poor lies, so they require larger and more effective grooves to channel the most debris possible. For the best spin performance from the rough, grooves will channel enough moisture and grass into the grooves to prevent grass from being caught between the ball and the face at impact.

Sole

Sole Designs

The overall shape of the sole represents its sole design. These sole designs are used to meet various players' needs.

Sole Radius

Sole Radius

Sole radius is designed to improve versatility around the greens. A curved sole allows the hands and club to be at different impact positions while still making proper contact with the ground. A flat radius aids stability on full shots.

Sole Width

Sole Width

Sole width is the measurement from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the sole. Sole width works like bounce - a larger sole width increases the upward force on the sole at impact, thus reducing fat shots and improving bunker play. However, a wide sole also reduces consistency on open-faced shots by significantly raising the leading edge off the ground at address/impact.
